Organization: Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) FSH is a thriving youth development organization - the first to combine the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership and academic achievement. For over 28 years, our award-winning afterschool and summer programs provide girls ages 6 to 18 from low-income communities with access to innovative education and health and wellness services that help them reach their fullest potential.  Our vision is for every student, regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams.

Position Overview: The Education Specialist leads academic enrichment and student support for students in grades 1–12 within a nonprofit youth development program. This role ensures high-quality academic support through strong systems, effective data tracking, and targeted interventions that drive student progress.

The Education Specialist serves as a key connector between students, families, tutors, and program staff, ensuring alignment and accountability toward academic success. This role is also responsible for collecting and interpreting student data to inform program decisions, communicate with families, and contribute to organizational and board-level reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support & Family Engagement

  • Serve as primary liaison for students and families, maintaining high expectations and consistent support.
  • Monitor academic progress and ensure access to appropriate supports (tutoring, interventions, enrichment).
  • Coordinate and schedule tutoring based on student needs.
  • Communicate regularly with families via the FSH Parent Portal regarding progress and expectations.
  • Support parent workshops and communications in partnership with leadership.

Data Collection, Tracking & Reporting

  • Collect and manage report cards and academic records for all students.
  • Create and maintain systems to track progress, attendance, and outcomes.
  • Analyze data to identify trends, gaps, and needed interventions.
  • Prepare clear summaries for internal use, family communication, and board reporting.
  • Partner with Development to support grant reporting and organizational data needs.

Staff Management & Coordination

  • Support recruitment and onboarding of teachers, tutors, and teaching assistants.
  • Supervise tutors, including scheduling, communication, and student matching.
  • Provide guidance and support to academic staff to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Conduct evaluations for assigned staff.

Collaboration & Program Alignment

  • Partner with Education, Programming, and Leadership teams to align academic support with program goals.
  • Share student insights and data trends to inform planning and decision-making.
  • Support surveys, family communication, and program-wide initiatives.

Supervision

  • Directly supervises: Tutors
  • Provides programmatic support and coordination to: Teachers and Teaching Assistants
  • Ensures alignment of academic support across enrichment, tutoring, and program components
  • Serves as a resource for student progress, data insights, and targeted support strategies
  • Collaborates with instructional staff while formal supervision of teachers and TAs remains with designated leadership

Work Schedule

  • Full-time, year-round position aligned with afterschool and summer programming
  • Weekday afternoons and evenings required
  • Occasional Saturdays/Sunday for events
  • Additional hours during peak periods (such as ice show)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • Minimum 5 years experience in education, youth development, or academic support (grades 1–12)
  • Strong ability to use data to drive decisions and outcomes
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Experience in nonprofit and/or youth development settings preferred
  • Experience supervising or coordinating staff preferred
